After its flashy introduction on Monday, my skepticism of the PlayBook deepened when there were no pre-release units available for us to try after the demo. The only glimpses available of the BlackBerry tablet were a few of them suspended behind glass running short videos in a continuous loop.
That, combined with the fact that the release date is “early 2011,” means that this product is nowhere near complete. Research in Motion announcing it 4-6 months before it actually arrives in the market is RIM’s way of saying, “Hey, we’ve got a tablet, too. Before you go out and buy an iPad or an Android tablet, hold off until we come out with ours.”
This “freezing the market” technique is an old trick employed effectively by others, but especially Microsoft. However, it doesn’t work when there are already viable products in the market from trusted vendors. The fact that RIM is pre-announcing the PlayBook so early is evidence that they are fearful of the iPad gaining too much momentum in the enterprise.
Another big warning siren with the PlayBook was the way RIM announced it. RIM co-CEO Mike Lazaridis put emphasis on two things:
1.This is a tablet for professional business users
2.The PlayBook has great specs
It certainly makes sense for RIM to focus on the enterprise. That’s where its traditional strength is and enterprises have taken a quick and surprising affinity to the iPad, which means there’s definitely a market there. However, while the PlayBook does has impressive specs, the fact that RIM chose to emphasize them so heavily isn’t a good sign.
RIM talked about the PlayBook’s dual core processor, 1 GB of RAM, and Flash 10.1 as if they had just pulled out a royal flush at the poker table. They seemed to gloat with self-satisfaction over each of these features, as if to say, “Aha! See, we’re sticking it to the iPad.”
Not only was that annoying, it was evidence that RIM is stuck in 1990s thinking about computing devices. The bottom line is that most of those specs don’t mean much any more. Both consumers and the enterprise — at least, the smart enterprises — want products that just work and that get the technology itself out of the way. (I would say that Flash is one of the things that people want to just work, but after using it on Android 2.2 devices and seeing how slow and buggy it is, I’m starting to think NOT having Flash on mobile devices is a benefit.)
The iPad has four killer features:
1.Ease of use
2.Great battery life
3.Lots of apps
4.Price
Any tablet that wants to compete with the iPad needs to be at least minimally competent in those four areas and then bring something to the table that outshines the iPad.
Unfortunately, the PlayBook is likely to come up short in all four areas.
In terms of ease of use, while the demo of the PlayBook’s tablet OS looks like a mix between the iPad and the Palm WebOS, RIM does not have a good history of building usable software. Their software is very secure and it’s full-featured, but ease of use has never been one of their strengths, so they would have to pull off a coup here. The primary reason why the iPad has been so successful is because the user experience is almost completely self-evident.
In neither RIM’s on-stage presentation nor in its official press release did the company mention a single word about battery life. While it sounds impressive that the PlayBack has a 1 GHz dual-core processor, it takes a lot of power to run that kind of CPU. BlackBerry devices typically have excellent battery life, so RIM knows what it’s doing in this department. Still, it would be very difficult to get over 10 hours of battery life (the iPad’s gold standard) out of tablet with a dual core CPU. And, the fact that RIM didn’t mention battery life is probably an indication that it’s something they’re still wrestling with.
In terms of apps, the PlayBook is built on QNX, a totally separate architecture than the traditional BlackBerry OS. Here’s what RIM said about it as an app platform in its official statement:
“The OS is fully POSIX compliant enabling easy portability of C-based code, supports Open GL for 2D and 3D graphics intensive applications like gaming, and will run applications built in Adobe Mobile AIR as well as the new BlackBerry WebWorks app platform announced today (which will allow apps to be written to run on BlackBerry PlayBook tablets as well as BlackBerry smartphones with BlackBerry 6). The BlackBerry Tablet OS will also support Java enabling developers to easily bring their existing BlackBerry 6 Java applications to the BlackBerry Tablet OS environment.”
I applaud RIM for having the guts to do a complete reboot on their tablet OS, but this also means that when the new platform launches there will probably won’t be many apps since most of the existing BlackBerry apps will need some tinkering in order to work on the tablet. And then, RIM is going to have to convince developers to write apps for its tablet instead of (or in addition to) iPad and Android.
The other thing RIM didn’t talk about when unveiling the PlayBook was the price. As most of you probably know, when a salesperson doesn’t tell you the price of something upfront it’s usually because the product is expensive and they want to sell you on the value so that you don’t get sticker shock from the big price tag.
A lot of people who scoffed at the idea of an Apple tablet at the rumored $999 price tag before its launch changed their minds when the iPad was unveiled at $499 for the least expensive model.
I’m afraid we could see the opposite phenomenon with the PlayBook, especially with all of the high-end specs RIM is touting. A lot of those who are intrigued by the PlayBook today could be priced out of the device when we finally learn the real price tag in the coming months. If it comes in at $800 or more, as I suspect it might, then it will likely be a narrow niche product, at best.

Low internal memory troubles
Pondering today on why my Blackberry storm with an 8Gig memory is coming up with this funny message saying my memory is low,and it comes up with a list of my favorite apps, and a choice to delete some of them, how cruel can this be RIM? then i went to investigate why such should happen.
What a shame to discover that all that RAM does not affect your internal memory,so when you download that favorite apps of yours from the Blackberry app world,ALWAYS have it at the back of your mind it is been downloaded straight into your internal memory of which, unfortunately according to the gospel preached by RIM (remember internal memory) hahahhaha is 128mb.
Then you think why would they be so mean to do that. First do not even bother to try to remove or delete the sample pictures and preloaded ringtones because it has been locked down, yeah locked down.Rim has a company has failed us because the according to survey, most people do not even use the sample picture has their wall paper or even the ringtones,so why in the world would they compel the user to be stuck with samples that can not be deleted to free up memory space on the phone.
So now i had to delete some of my favorite apps since RIM has been so wondeful with there locked down samples.I tried downloading some sofrwares to try and have them deleted but to know avail, some of the best software out there for this includes, filescout. This you can try at your own risk.
Well now that you have discovered why sooner or later you are going to get this message on your Blackberry phone,do not panic or have sleepless night on this,i Will keep you posted whenever RIM decides to give us an idea of getting rid of this sample folders we hardly use.
Issues of not been able to view some videos on your mobile phone, like videos on cnn,its simply because our smartphones can not play flash media,so i started researching into this and i found a forum where Adobe had agreed to incorporate their softwares into some of the latest smartphones, they said it would start with the Android phones then the Blackberry phones,my fingers are crossed, hopefully someday soon we would all be able to have video streams from our favorite video sites.
Please feel free to post your comment, new findings relating to your Blackberry phones and issues you might have come across using it.
Stay safe and always rememeber to make your car a phone free zone,.,,,,,

Security and backup issues
How vital are the information on your phone to you? have you thought about the pain you will feel losing all those lovely pictures you took during the last valentine with your boyfriend, your kid's first day at school pictures e.tc.
With the increasing crime rate of mobile phones robbery in Lagos and all over the world, one then has to put a lot into consideration about safe guarding this important information and data on your phone, here are some things you need to do:
Backup: My advice is to always backup your phone every other week via your blackberry desktop manager.Dont be lazy it takes about 10mins to finish, why wait till you lose your phone before you worry.
There are loads of backup sites online for mobile phones, but the best so far from my personal experience is still Smart Guard, its so easy to use,and the beauty about this software is that a user can remotely wipe off the whole information and data on the phone when its stolen or misplaced.
You can also get some freebies off the internet, just make sure your getting a software with a true certificate before installing on your mobile phone.

Quick note, always remember to do a battery pull once or twice a week, helps to refresh your RAM(Radom Acess Memory).
Also remember to watch where you use your phones,do not make your self a moving target, always windup your windows if you have to pick or make an important call, the next guy at the bus stop might just be another phone thief, casing the joint.
With the use of microsoft Outlook you can syn your contact details to your comouter and keep it safe,in case you want to syn it with another mobile phone later in the future.
Have you wanted to get the details of a prodduct and you just can not get your hands on the literature of the product, well with ScanLife which you can get from your Blackberry app World,or just be simply googling it,you can install this on your Blackberry, all you have to do with this lovely piece of software is point and click on a barcode of the product and it automatically sends its online and gives you the detail information of the product like, manufacturer, product details and even other shops you can get the product, go on give it a try,its fun when you can just pick a piece of your kid's book and scan the barcode and get all the details in just a few second.
And congrats to the 19year old boy who just created is own Youtube Instant, great work kid.!!!!!!!!!!!

Tethering for your blackberry
Today with the rain pounding down on my window i decided as usual to fiddle and tweak my blackberry storm, then thought about alot of people out there that can not get there hands on the installation CD that came with their blackberry product,
so thinking to myself, if you have to download it from the internet with this low connection speed in Nigeria,it would probably take forever and you might end up angry for wasting your time and energy trying to download it online, why am i going on about this,i guess its because i have on my acer notebook an updated version of my blackberry desktop manager 5.0 Version that has the IP modem application, with this and a little maunal confirguration you can get on the internet in know time.
well good news to Blackberry users, with the help of Tethering you can use your phone to get on the internet where ever you are by following this simple instructions.
First you need to download and install Tether to your PC by clicking on the link for your operating system:
- windows Version: http://tether.com/t/setupdrv.exe
- Mac version http://tether.com/t/Tether.dmg
2. To download Tether on your Blackberry by simply opening the following URL with your Blackberry device, from the browser:
http://tether.com/t/tether.jad
Please disable all wireless network connections and run the software Tether on both PC and the Blackberry and follow the onscreen instructions.
If you are seeing an error for the No available port, this means you need to set the correct APN and make sure all permissions have been granted to Tether on your Blackberry device.
For the Zain network i use, the APN is internet.ng.zain.com
Have fun and please leave me a comment after trying this at home.
